Why should employee wellbeing matter to my organisation?
This is a question we often hear company bosses ask so we decided to find out by commissioning an exclusive survey with YouGov.
At an event in London to unveil the findings, which you can download now, we invited some of the UK’s most forward-thinking business leaders to respond.
They stressed their belief that there is a ‘business imperative for wellbeing’, categorising having a healthy and happy workforce as a business output and a leadership responsibility that, if done well, drives better financial performance.
There was talk of staff wellbeing being a top down and bottom-up issue – that when senior managers showed their own vulnerability, they reinforced the value of care in their business and therefore inspired trust and loyalty.
Employers were urged to communicate rather than broadcast to their employees and give them more freedom to make choices about the support they wanted and not be judged or punished when they were struggling.
There was agreement that employee wellbeing wasn’t a ‘fluffy optical’ but a critical part of an organisation performing well.

Our employee wellbeing research
The figures in the video come from our exclusive survey of 3000 employers and employees.
We asked employers about the support they currently provided and employees about the type of support they would like to have. The results highlighted a significant gap between expectation and reality. The resulting 44 page report Exploring The Disconnect Of Employee Wellbeing supports the view that despite companies’ best efforts to support their employees, many are failing.
Sample of the findings:
• One in four businesses said they spent nothing at all on mental health and wellness support
• Just two per cent of employees said they would approach a line manager if they had a problem
• Less than 5% of staff used the EAPs and wellbeing apps they were provided with
• 70% of under 35s wanted support for the cost of living as opposed to just 37% of over 55s

The Report and the event to launch it certainly sparked some great conversations as guests and influencers posted their take on the findings.
Organisations are grappling with a workplace that has changed forever as a result of the accumulated impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the ongoing cost of living crisis.
One speaker summed it up saying, “This is a wake-up call for the corporate world.”
